greece politics

Greece is one of the oldest country and people in this world and it is also been through a lot of changes including politic changes.

Today Greece is a democratic republic where the power in the state is divided as follows: the government is ruled by the Prime Minister. The government also holds the legislative power together with the Parliament, while the judiciary is independent by these.

Even though Greece is such an old country, the way in which the country is being ruled is done after a combination between the model of French and German. The president has some legislative and executive functions but the most important character is the Prime Minister and the cabinet. The president is elected by the parliament in Greece.

Today the president of Greece is Karlos Papoulias that belongs to the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement. He is president since 2005. The prime minister is George Papandreou that belongs to the same party as the president and has occupied this position since October 2009. Since the president is elected only for a period of five years it means that Karlos Papoulias will be president only until 2010. The new president will be elected by the parliament through votes. In order for the votes to be validated there are a minimum number of 200 votes which represents 2/3. For the second vote the same number is necessary and for the third and the final vote only 180 votes are required which represents 3/5. There are many rights that are attributed to the president, like the power to declare war, but the president does not have the right to dissolve the government and the parliament.

If in other countries the president is elected by the people in Greece the people are choosing the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is responsible for the actions of the Government and also administers them.

The parliament of Greece is elected by the people that are age over 18. There are 300 people in the parliament and they are elected for a period of five years.
