Livadia, the capital of Viotia prefecture, is 27 km from the famous winter destination and is located between Parnassos and Elikonas mountains. It is a town renowned for its tasty souvlaki, which is reputed throughout the country.
However, this is not the only reason to come to Livadia. You should also fit in a trip to the Kria region whose water comes from the Erkina river (along with Neda in Messinia, it is the only river with a feminine name in the country), the picturesque bridges, the towering trees, stone buildings and cobbled streets for walks along the banks of the river. You can, of course, find traditional taverns which serve local cuisine.
Other attractions in the town are the springs of Lithi and Mnimosini, the sacred canyon (just above the springs in Kria) with the stone theater (various events, most importantly, Trofonia every September take place here), the small church of Saint Minas and Saint Jerusalem next to the theater, the Oracle of Trofonia (whose details you can find in the Livadia Historical-Ethnological Museum, tel. +30 22613 50802, mouseiolivadeias.blogspot.gr) and the castle on Saint Ilias hill (a unique castle in Greece, a remnant of the Catalan occupation of the country).
