Start your day with a visit to the Acropolis archaeological site. Make sure to visit early in the morning (the site is open to the public from 08.00 daily) to avoid the heat of the sun especially during the summer months and if you have small children with you. Continue with a stroll slong the beautiful Dionysiou Aeropagitou pedestrian Street and to the Ancient Agora. Walk through the narrow streets and explore the picturesque Plaka with the School Life and Education Museum (23, Tripodon Street, Plaka, tel. +30 210 3250341) and Monastiraki with its open-air market.
Taste traditional dishes, like souvlaki pita and kebab in one of the taverns in the area; Bairaktaris (2, Monastiraki Square, tel. +30 210 3213036) and Thanasis (69, Mitropoleos Street, tel. +30 210 3244705) are the most famous. The day continues an educational tour of the Acropolis Museum (via metro). Note that you will need at least 2 hours.
The shops have an array of interesting gift ideas. If you feel like it, you can continue exploring the city with a visit to Zappeion Mansion. In the evening you can dine in one of the restaurants in Kolonaki and combine it with an evening walk window shopping on the way to the central Syntagma Square. If you are lucky, you can watch the changing of the evzones guards, which occurs every hour. Then go down towards Ermou Street, which will be more tranquil at this time of day.
