1 day in Athens for families
Travelling with the family means happy travelling! Athens is a city friendly to those who travel with their family, offering many activities that involve children, as well as many things that delight their parents. Wonderful museums and archaeological sites, parks, beaches and venues for countless fun moments await you to discover them all. So, what can you do in just one day so that all the family members are happy?
There is no better start than the city’s landmark. Begin your day with a visit to the Acropolis. Make sure to get there early in the morning to avoid the heat of the sun, especially during the summer months and if you have children with you. If you want to make it an educational experience, don’t forget to visit the New Acropolis Museum as well.
Continue with a stroll along the beautiful Dionysiou Aeropagitou pedestrian Street, wander through the alleys and explore the picturesque Plaka with the School Life and Education Museum and Monastiraki with its flea market. Tylixto Greek Wrap, on Aiolou pedestrian street, offers tradition "wrapped" in your hand. Don’t forget to also make a stop at Hans & Gretel to buy some candy for the children and try the bubble waffle and the chimney cakes.
Continue your exploration with a stroll in Zappeion Mansion and the lush green National Gardens. In approximately 15 hectares, you will walk amongst rare plant species, you will spend time playing with your little ones and feeding the ducks, you will rest on wooden benches, you will take family photographs under beautiful pergolas, and finally, you will see up close ancient finds and busts. Your walk will end up at the central Syntagma Square. If you are lucky, you will watch the changing of the guards of evzones, which takes place every hour.
In the evening, you can dine in one of the restaurants downtown, like the Hard Rock Cafe Athens in Monastiraki or -if you want to eat something Greek and authentic- the Rosalia in Exarchia.
