At the junction of Michalakopoulou and Papadiamantopoulou streets at the centre of Athens (just steps away from Megaro Mousikis metro station) Foukou restaurant made its appearance on mid-March. The restaurant honours particularly its origin (foukou is the grill in Cypriot), and thus serves traditional tastes of Cypriot cuisine.
Executed with modern techniques and served in their most modern version, the authentic Cypriot recipes that you will taste here are made exclusively from selected, pure raw ingredients that arrive in the kitchen of Foukou directly from Cyprus.
The dishes are cooked in three ways –grilled, roasted or casserole– and cover a wide range in order to satisfy the wishes and tastes of each and every customer. Homemade sheftalia (type of meat ball wrapped in caul fat), wine braised sausages, Cypriot pastrami and of course Cypriot halloumi cheese are all grilled on charcoal and served in Cyprus pita, the dish that is synonymous to the restaurant, as one would say.
When it comes to the other proposals of the menu, do not forget to try kleftiko (lamb slowly cooked for 7 hours in the oven with potatoes), ravioli with halloumi cheese filling and mint, mug with minced meat (phyllo of fried bulgur stuffed with minced pork, parsley and pepper), rustic pasta with trimmings of halloumi cheese, and grilled halloumi.
Note that it features three different daily specials and four options in fish besides the menu –fresh grilled salmon, grilled sardines, squid, octopus "sitting" in the pot (with wine, cinnamon, bay leaves and olive oil).
If you are with friends (more than 2 people), we recommend the "Cypriot meze" –a platter of 20 different Cypriot delicacies to taste the best of what exists in traditional Cypriot cuisine. Round off your lunch or dinner with one of the most traditional sweets of Cyprus, the "fingers", fried homemade phyllo with syrup and nuts.
Its pluses include the elegant space, in grey and white tones combined with wood to create an intimate and cosy atmosphere, both on the ground floor and the first floor (also available for more prive occasions) and outdoors at the tables on the pedestrian street.
