The greatest cultural jewel of Athens is located 4.5 km. from the city centre, at Delta of Faliro in Palaio Faliro. Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is one of the most complete cultural green spaces across the country and its operation is centred around the Education-Culture- Sustainability triptych.
Its premises of 210,000 sq.m. house the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera and the Stavros Niarchos Park. The entire project design was led by the architectural Renzo Piano Building Workshop of the renowned architect Renzo Piano, and it was created to be a multifunctional place of education, culture and entertainment.
National Library of Greece (NLG)
The new building of the National Library of Greece –with ample natural light diffused in all areas– harmoniously combines traditional with technological innovation, in an area of 22,000 sq.m. The lending library, bolstered by a significant book collection and other media –note that the National Library's collections include over 4,500 manuscript codices from the 9th to the 19th century and a rich variety of important historical documents and archives– will include separate areas for adults, teenagers, and children and will offer a wide range of educational and cultural programs. At the same time, it will also have the capacity to function as a venue for exhibitions of its holdings, offering the public the opportunity to view Greece’s treasures and cultural heritage.
Greek National Opera (GNO)
In a building of 28,000 sq.m., which stands out for its unique architecture, world-class acoustics, technological capabilities, flexible staging and innate beauty, music lovers and architecture cognoscenti will find their exciting destination in the city. The main hall of the Greek National Opera is in par with the best European opera houses, while its design is highly impressive with the suspended balconies and the concrete walls towering six stories high dominating the lobby. In essence, it is a multi-use venue capable of hosting a variety of performances and events, such as opera productions, ballets, concerts, plays, children's performances, etc.
Stavros Niarchos Park
Stavros Niarchos Park is a vital green space offering its guests opportunities for recreation, relaxation and learning. It is the filled with trees, plants, water fountains, paths, allées, playgrounds and open spaces which are available for concerts, exhibitions and other events. Its most significant attractions include the Mediterranean Garden with a wide range of evergreen and endemic plants, the hill from where the panoramic view of the sea and the Acropolis is awe-inspiring, the 900 sq.m. glass-walled Reading Room, the Agora (available for events) and the tree-lined pedestrian Esplanade, ideal for jogging, cycling, etc.
