Athens Classic Marathon (November)

Every November the Athens Classic Marathon takes place; it's an annual international race with more than 8,000 participants from all over the world.

The Marathon was initially organised in 1955 and was repeated every two years, while in 1967 it became an annual race. The course is the classic one, beginning from Marathon and terminating at the Panathenaic Stadium.

It is organised in honour of the Athenian hoplite, who in 490 BC followed exactly this course in order to announce the victory of the Athenians against the Persians. He only managed to spell “We won” and then he died, as he was exhausted, after having run 42 km.
