In the historic municipality of Marathon in the north east of Attica, 28 km from the center of Athens, lies the dam of the artificial Marathon lake and is one of the most impressive sights.
The lake occupies an area of about 60 acres and is one of the 10 most important wetlands in Attica due to its abundance of host species. The lake was created in 1931 by raising the dam and, up until 1959, was the main source of water supply for Athens.
Marathon municipality, however, is a landmark for the famous Tomb, where the remains of 192 soldiers who fell in the battle against the Persians in 490 BC were uncovered. Nearby is the quiet Marathon beach, an ideal choice for families owing to it shallow water. There are taverns here which serve fresh fish.
