Rakkan

Rakkan is Japanese for optimism. This is a very fitting name for this top restaurant in Athens, which represents Japanese fusion cuisine, as after dining here on the chef's exquisite creations you are certain to feel optimistic.

With minimal style, this restaurant in Kifissia, is dominated by simplicity. Here, the design team shined by creating an impressive construction from wooden cubes (do not try to count them as they reach the 9,900!), which can be easily likened to a vast reverse stylish maquette. During the summer, the outdoor area is the protagonist here with its impressive atrium being "dressed" with a lounge mood –comfortable sofas, dim lighting, excellent acoustics– and welcomes you in a renewed environment with the minimalism of the cubes grabbing your attention.

Combining creative, fusion cuisine with techniques and recipes from Europe and Japan, creating a new, "euroriental" approach, the award-winning chef Naruse Fumiaki in collaboration with the Chef de cuisine Giannis Simotas present new signature dishes. Light and healthy dishes with light soups such as Miso soup with vegetables and wakame, Spicy Thai curry (veloute soup with red curry and coconut milk with sea bass tempura) and Spicy shrimp gazpacho (cold tomato soup with spicy shrimp) and creative salads such as Rakkan fresh seafood (mixed green salad with seaweed, squid, salmon and sea bass), Salmon tataki (mixed green salad with salmon and sesame ponzu dressing) and Sashimi (five different kinds of sashimi fish with thin noodles and chimichuri sauce) certainly leave the best of impressions.

The appetisers that stand out include grilled scallops with curry sauce and crispy cauliflower, New Style Carpaccio (lightly cooked Carpaccio from salmon or sea bass with Yuzu Soy Hot Oil sauce) and fresh salmon belly tartar in Japanese sauce Kyoto style. It is worth mentioning the Chilean sea bass with potato puree and champagne sauce with miso, lobster skewer with butter sauce flavoured with lime and the Yellowtail Jalapeno (thinly sliced magiatiko with cilantro, jalapeno sauce and yuzu ponzu soy sauce).

Finally, the excellent signature cocktails, which are inspired by the land of the rising sun, made by the bar manager Apostolos Tsatsiras have become a favourite choice.
