Description

Folk House (Museum) Chania

To get a picture of urban and rural life in Crete in the early to mid 20th century, visit the Folk House (Museum) Chania, on the central Halidon Street opposite the Cathedral and just below the Archaeological Museum. Established in 1990, it was the initiative of Aspasia Bikaki and Irini Koumandraki, who managed to gather enough folklore material to create a unique, organized display for the public collection.

The exhibits are divided into thematic sections in order to faithfully display the farm work (plowing, sowing, threshing, grape pressing), household tasks (food preparation, weaving loom etc) as well as the rooms in a Cretan house, such as the sitting room and kitchen.

You will see representations of traditional occupations such as a shoemaker, tailor, basket weaver etc here and there are very interesting collections of embroidery and textiles.
