The largest natural freshwater lake in Crete is located in the prefecture of Chania, 47 km from the centre of the beautiful city. Kournas lake, formerly known as Korisia, owes its present name to the Arabic word for lake and is located in the western part of the prefecture, 4 km from Georgioupolis.
It occupies an area of 579 acres and is 1.087 m long and 880 m wide, with a maximum depth of 22.5 meters and is among the Natura 2000 protected areas.
