One of the closest destinations to the capital is Therisso, located 12 km from the center of Chania.
To reach it, cross a slightly uphill tarmac road, which is certain to amaze you. On the journey you will pass by the tall trees and admire the lush landscape in the Therisso canyon with its towering rocks and the rushing river, Kladissos. The village is situated at an altitude of 580 meters with the White Mountains rising proudly above it. Therisso is famous for its rich history as it was the base for fighters of the 1821 Revolution.
On 10 March 1905, Eleftherios Venizelos and 1,000 other fighters from all over Crete gathered here and preached the armed revolutionary struggle against Prince George II in order to succeed in the union of the island with the rest of Greece. The building erected as the headquarters of the fighters, is today a museum (Tuesday-Sunday: 08.00-14.30, free admission). You will notice the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos in the square. Lastly, the Museum of National Resistance is located in the village.
