Description

Pontikonisi & Panagia Vlahernon

This is undoubtedly one of the most famous attractions on Corfu. For the Greeks the song "Kerkyra me to Pontikonisi..." instantly springs to mind, while foreigners are certain to have heard or seen impressive photographs of it.

To get there you have to head for Garitsa and after a scenic drive, you will reach Kanoni. Herein lies the little green island of Pontikonisi in front of Corfu airport, with its floating airstrip in the Halikiopoulou bay.

Pontikonisi has been associated with many legends over the years. One is about the ship that brought Odysseus to the island of Corfu. During the terrible storm, Odysseus was washed up on the shore of the island and the god Poseidon turned his boat into the green island.

You can visit it daily from 9 in the morning with boats (€2.5 per person, round trip). Here, you can visit the church that is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ (Metamorfossis tou Sotiros) and celebrates every year on August 6, you will enjoy the amazing lush green landscape, admire the peacock-mascot, and have a relaxing coffee at the cafe.

On your return, even if you don't pass by boat to Pontikonisi, it is worth visiting Panagia Vlachernon.
