Agia Aikaterini of Sinai
Agia Aikaterini of Sinai

At Agias Aikaterinis Square, north east of Agios Minas cathedral, in the centre of Heraklion city, you will come across the church of the Monastery of Agia Aikaterini of the Sianites.

Built during the B' Byzantine period (10th century A.D.), the church was a great cultural and arts centre in the area from the 15th to the 17th century, while after 1669 it was converted into a mosque, Zoulfiakar Ali Mosque.

From 1967 until today you have the chance to see a great exhibition of Byzantine icons and relics, inside the church, which unfold 6 centuries of Orthodox history (14th-19th century).

Some of the most important exhibits in the museum are the 6 very important works by icon-painter Michael Damaskinos, representative of the Cretan School.
