73km from the centre of Heraklion, south of the Monastery of Odigitria in the south part of the prefecture, Agiofaraggo is one of the most easily accessible and passable gorges of the Asterousia mountain.
It is about 1,5km long, with imposing rocks on either side as well as scattered caves. Note that Agiofaraggo was the first centre of asceticism not just in Heraklion but in the whole of Crete.
As you come out of the gorge you will see the beach of the same name, one of the most beautiful ones in the prefecture. There are no facilities in this small, pebbled beach, but you will be impressed by the crystal clear, deep waters. There are also quite a few campers here.
It will take you about 20-30 minutes to get to the beach, but it is an unforgettable experience. Alternatively, you can take a boat from Matala, Kaloi Limenes or Agia Galini.
