In a neoclassical listed building "Andreas and Maria Kalokairinou Residence", at the intersection of Sofokli Venizelou street and Lysimachou Kalokairinou street, the Historical Museum of Crete was created in 1953 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, in order to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Crete from the early Byzantine period to modern times.
Nowadays, through collecting, purchasing and accepting donations of various objects, the museum can boast that it offers visitors a spherical view of the History of Art in Crete from early Christian times up to the 20th century.
Through exhibitions, you will have the chance to get familiar with art from the Byzantine period to Modern Art, with the works of significant literary personalities of Greece (Kazantzakis, Elytis, etc.), while you can also see the presentation of great historical events from the end of the 19th century up to WWII.
Lectures, scientific conferences, film showings, book presentations, etc., also take place in the museum.
