In the south part of the Venetian Walls in Heraklion, at the end of 1821 street, you will come across Martinengo bastion where the tomb of the great Cretan author Nikos Kazantzakis is found.

At the highest spot of Heraklion city, at the tower of Martinengo bastion (next to the old Ergotelis football stadium), therefore, is where, according to his wishes, the one and only Nikos Kazantzakis is buried.

The inscription on the marble grave with the impressive wooden cross that reads "I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free", stands out.
