Festival of Agios Gerasimos

In honor of the patron saint of Kefalonia, Agios Gerasimos, two major festivals are held every year, on August 16 (his death anniversary) and on October 20 (when his remains were removed). Starting on the 15th and on the 16 August, Kefalonians and thousands of worshippers from all over Greece flock to the island's foremost monastery in Omala, to worship at the shrine and to attend the grand celebration.

The tabernacle is taken on a procession 500 m from the church until the platanos tree, which, according to tradition, the saint himself planted. On October 20 there is a similar celebration, but less crowded than the summer gathering.
