Two kilometers from the town of Argostoli, on the peripheries of Lassi is located the famous geological phenomenon of Katavothres which remained unexplained until the early '60s.
Seawater appears to disappear through clefts in the rock. Scientists had to use their imagination and several kilos of indelible dye to establish that water, after crossing a labyrinthine underground route, ends up on the other side of the island after two weeks, in Melissani and the beaches of Karavomylos in Sami bay.
The old watermill and one of the most famous shops on the island, the modern club-restaurant named Katavothres (tel. +30 26710 22221), complete the beautiful scene.
