In a remarkable wine producing destination such as Kefalonia, one cannot miss visitng the wineries, which offer the possibility of a deeper knowledge of the island’s wine tradition. From the plateau of Omala the heart of the wine-growing zone of the famous Robola, until the region of Elio and the peninsula of Paliki, the winegrowers will welcome you with pleasure to show you around the facilities and their vineyards, before offering you a tasting of famous local varieties.
The wineries that we recommend visiting are the following:
Robola Production Cooperative: Operating since 1987 in the centre of the famous Robola, in Omala, under the slopes of Mount Ainos and next to the monastery of Agios Gerasimos. Here you will learn everything about this fine white dry wine variety, which is famous worldwide. The modern unit of the cooperative gathers and processes about 85% of the production of the island. Robola of Kefalonia, the San Gerassimo and Plagies Aino are some of the famous wines that are now found in foreign countries (Tel. + 30 26710 86301, www.robola.gr, Monday-Friday: 07.00-20.00, Saturday & Sunday 09.00-20.00).
Gentilini: The story of the first boutique winery in Greece begins in the 1970s – when Spyros Kosmetatos planted the first vines in Minies. Today, the tradition continues and evolves through Marianna Kosmetatou, daughter of the founder, and her husband, Peter Markantonato, with continuous experimentation and dedication to local varieties – especially Robola. Gentilini Aspro, with the scent of citrus, honey and melon, Gentilini Robola, with harmonious citrus and grapefruit aromas, and the deep red Gentilini Syrah are somee of the wines that stand out. There are many tasting programs to choose from, such as the free trial of 3 wines from the Modern Selection (Aspro, & Red Rose) and the VIP escort tour of the vineyards and the winery, which includes testing 3 aged wines (€ 5/person). Also features a stylish guesthouse (Tel. + 30 26710 41618, www.gentilini.gr, daily: 10.30-14.30 & 17.30-20.30).
