At the entrance of the island, near the bridge of Lefkada, you will find one of the most remarkable and important sights of the island. This is the famous Castle of Agia Mavra, built in 1300 by the Frankish ruler Ioanni Orsini, as dowry for his marriage to the daughter of the Despot of Epirus, Nikiforos A'.
A model of fortification at that time, it protected the capital of the island against pirates and other enemies of Lefkada in the first decade of the 14th century until 1684. After the island's occupation by the Turks in 1479, an arched bridge was built with 360 arches that supported the pipes of the aqueduct that channelled water to the castle.
Today, inside the castle, there are only ruins of these constructions of the Venetian period functioned as barracks and warehouses.
