The highest in altitude village of Lefkada (750m.) is located in the centre of the hinterland of the island. This is Egklouvi, famous throughout Greece for its delicious lentils.
It is traditional with two-storey stone houses, narrow streets and residents engaged in the cultivation of lentils, livestock farming and vineyards. Allegedly its name comes from the fact that is enclosed (in Greek “egklovismenos”) between a small hill and the neighbouring villages. Egklouvi lentils have become the trademark not only of the village but of Lefkada as well, since even today traditional high-quality methods of cultivation are used in their production.
Do not forget to visit Voltoi village at the plateau Vouni, around the chapel of Agios Donatos, which is located 2 km from Egklouvi and it is a special and unique settlement with stone vaulted constructions –fine examples of archaic architecture– that served as temporary dwellings during the harvesting and threshing of lentils.
