Karya, the main village of Lefkada, is located in the mountainous interior of the island, within a 15 km distance from Lefkada town (20' drive).
Within the embraces of the green landscape, Karya is built at an altitude of 500 metres and stands out among visitors for its exceptional climate and the wonderful natural environment. Traditional, two-storey, stone buildings with tile roofs, courtyards and terraces, alleys and squares with supercentenarian sycamore trees, scattered churches and windmills compose the beautiful picture of the village, which you will discover during your walk in it.
In the central square of the village, apart from the Church of Agios Spyridonas, dating from the late 19th century, you will find traditional taverns and cafes to pleasantly spend your time and mingle with the hospitable residents of the village.
Karya preserves intact and alive the traditional element and culture as well as the traditions and customs that are lost in the mists of time. A visit to the Folkloric Museum will convince you. The village is also famous for the traditional embroideries that even today the women of the island embroider.
Don't forget to visit the monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos on the foothills of Karya, dating from 1605 AD, with the magnificent frescoes, the wooden iconostasis and the stone cells.
