On March 23, 1821 Kalamata is liberated from the Turkish yoke, after the glorious battle of the Greek revolutionaries.

Hence, in memory of this historic victory, the liberation of Kalamata is celebrated with grandeur each year.

The celebrations usually last three days and include representation of the battle and a parade, concerts, doxology at the church of Agii Apostli (the place where the flame of the Revolution of 1821 was lit for the first time) in the heart of the historical center.
