The Contemporary Greek Art Gallery of Kalamata has been operating in the town center since 1962. Located on busy Aristomenous Street, it is housed in Kalamata's Municipal Cultural Center and was created at the initiative of the Kalamata Popular Library and the painter Kostas Giannakopoulos.
The Art Gallery has a collection of more than 430 works of art including paintings, drawings, etchings, sculptures and constructions by major Greek painters of the 20th century as well as works by local artists.
The Art Gallery's primary collection includes works of art from the 1950s and 1960s that express the artistic concerns of artists of that time. That does not mean that the Art Gallery does not hold collections from pre- or post periods or works that express the trends and path taken by Greek art in the 20th century.
