Description

War of Darts (Easter)

The war of darts (saitopolemos), which takes us back many centuries, is revived every Easter Sunday evening at 20.30 at the old Slaughterhouses on the west coast of Kalamata.

Specifically, in the Ottoman era, when the Greeks fought the Turks with great heroism and Messinians were able to stop the cavalry with explosive-filled darts.

Today, participants are divided into two groups, those known as the "crowds" are dressed in traditional costumes and the "rebels" are armed with handmade cardboard darts filled with gunpowder. Once the signal is given the firing begins, night turns to day and the spectacle is simply breathtaking.
