Manto Mavrogenous’ statue which dominates the area of Gialos, right in the middle of Manto Mavrogenous square, is a work of the sculptor Kostas Dimitriadis.
Manto Mavrogenous was a heroine of the 1821 Greek struggle for independence. She was born in 1796 in a village of Paros called Marmara. During the Revolution she operated mainly in Mykonos, where she was a leading figure in the rebellion of the islanders against the Turks. Standing out for her exceptional education and European oriented culture, she was a unique personality in the Greek fight for liberation from the Ottoman yoke.
