Description

Corsair night (August)

Every year on August 23rd, nine days after the Assumption of the Virgin, a unique custom is revived in Naoussa. The locals re-enact Barbarossa’s invasion in Naoussa on 1537 (during which the raiders stole all the women in the settlement), as a way of exorcising the sad memories of the past.

According to the custom, the "pirates" landed in Naoussa from sea lighting flares, stole the women and disappeared in the beautiful alleys of this Cycladic village.
