Agia Marina Church
Agia Marina Church

One of the most famous churches in the area, Agia Marina church is located in Kissos village, in the eastern part of Pelion. The three-aisle basilica was built on the village square in 1650 and it stands out for the unique architecture, the impressive belfry and the fountain in the courtyard.

The interior is equally impressive as there are four domes decorated and painted by painter Ioannis Pagonis, each dome featuring a different figure. On the first one there is Saint Marina, on the second Holy Mary, on the third the Pantocrator and on the fourth one, God in the form of an old man. The same artist has created all the icons found in the church, dating back to 1802.

The woodcut temple decorated with golden elements made by craftsmen from Epirus during 1700-1720, is also fascinating. It is worth mentioning that it took 60 years to complete the whole project. The murals in the church are inspired from the New and the Old Testament, the Apocalypse and natural history. During the Turkish Occupation the church was a Secret School.
