In the centre of east Pelion, Anilio is a village surrounded by lush green vegetation in the mountain of the Centaurs, ideal for quiet holidays, away from the crowded destinations in the area. It is named after its location, (Anilio meaning without sunlight), as during the winter there is hardly any sunlight.
It is located 40 km from Volos, but near Tsagarada, Kissos and Zagora, so it is ideal for exploring the wider area. The fact that it is very near the famous Papa Nero, Agioi Saranta and Agios Ioannis beaches, is a great asset.
At the picturesque square you will see the Agios Athanasios basilica, a church dating back to the 18th century, with a very interesting woodcut temple. On the day celebrating Agios Athanasios, you will have the chance to experience an authentic, traditional celebration wit music and dancing.
If you are in Anilio during the carnival period you can take part in the burning of the Carnival at the main square on the Sunday before Ash Monday, but also watch the hot-air balloons in the air.
