The new age tsipouradiko Me Zen is located at the pedestrian Alonnisou street, in the center of Volos, and brings together in perfect harmony local traditional recipes with contemporary cooking techniques. The pun of its name is intentional and refers to the state of self-meditation you will enter when you get a taste of its alcohol extracts as well as the dishes that accompany them. It focuses on serving pure tsipouro and excellent meze.
Grigoris and Andreas, the owners, travel all across Greece to discover producers, ingredients and ideas. They salt and smoke the products they serve, they make their own pickles and search the mountains for mushrooms, truffles, wild herbs and mulls.
A window fridge, an alembic with copper pipes running around the walls, a lot of aged metal, traditional café tables and an open kitchen are all pieces of the puzzle that makes up its unique premises.
Taramosalata, tsirosalata from Constantinople with mackerel preserved in vinegar and dill, salmon pastourma, cod gyro served with tomatoes cut in cubes, onions and yogurt, dried octopus cooked with herbs on a stew and puffer fish with fresh onion, tomato and mustard are some of the dishes included in the menu.
Tsipouro, ouzo and premium spirits are served with the fitting meze. The alcohol extracts come from famous producers and are a combination of bottled small portions (50, 100, 200 ml) and homemade recipes on display.
