One of the most famous villages in the prefecture, Anogeia is located in the north part of Rethymno, 55km from the city centre (1hr 10- minute drive). It is named after the spot it is located (anogeio meaning above earth) and it is a place you should definitely visit if you want to have a truly authentic, Cretan experience.
At Anogeia, the locals have preserved their customs, with respect to tradition and culture. This village is also the birthplace of many important Cretan artists, such as Nikos Xylouris, Antonis Psarantonis, Vasilis Skoulas, etc., who have contributed greatly, each in their own way, to modern culture.
At Anogeia you will feel like you have gone back in time. Villagers are very hospitable and ready to tell visitors all about the history of their village. Note that they have their own dialect with a heavy accent.
