Carnival of Rethymno

One of the most famous events in Crete, and the third biggest carnival in Greece -after the one in Patras and Xanthi- the carnival of Rethymno is one of the most important institutions of the city, and it has been celebrated for the past 100 years.

Through the carnival, note that the first humouristic shows took place in 1914, the city of Rethymno attempts, with great success, to exhibit its unique identity, while at the same time it highlights the long history and rich tradition of the area.

For about 3 consecutive weeks the whole city is in a festive mood, while locals as well as visitors put on the most colourful and inspired costumes before heading to different parts of the city where various parties take place with music, dancing, masquerades and parades for both adults and children.

The most famous event during the Carnival is the "Hidden treasure hunt", which took place in 1990 for the first time, and gets everybody in the city on their feet. This is a mystery game that takes players to different locations in the city. The winning team is the one that finds the treasure first by solving all the puzzlers.

The main parade with floats and participants takes place on Carnival Sunday. The night before there is a night parade with adults and children, while on Ash Monday the traditional Koulouma (beginning of Lent) is celebrated.
