One of the oldest and most traditional patisseries in Rethymno, Mona Lisa Skartsilakis in the heart of the Old City was established in 1950 and the third generation of owners is now in charge, with Nikos Skartsilakis continuing the tradition started by his grandfather Dimitris.
This family business stands out for the freshness of its sweets, which are prepared from selected raw ingredients in the workshop of the patisserie in the premises. Mona Lisa is known for the sweet treats drenched in syrup -based on the recipes of grandfather Dimitris-, with baklava, galaktoboureko (custard pie with phyllo) with sheep milk and kataifi standing out for its patrons. It is also famous for its other traditional sweets like tzevremes (syrup pastry with phyllo pastry and chocolate layers dipped in chocolate), pudding (syrupy cake with almond and chocolate), etc.
You will find many bakery goodies, including fresh fluffy brioche, classic or chocolate, while the patisserie is also distinguished for its ice cream prepared with sheep milk, available in 12 flavours with vanilla and dark chocolate sorbet being the best sellers.
