5km north of Rethymno city, at the foot of Mount Vrysina, you will come across the Monastery of Agia Eirini – easily accessible from the city centre– built in 1362. This is a monastery complex that looks fortified.
According to historical data, the Monastery of Agia Eirini is one of the oldest ones in Crete, and it first opened during the second Byzantine period, that is before the Venetians came to the island.
During the 1821 Revolution, the monastery was destroyed by the Turks, while restoration started in 1989, according to the monastery style of the time it was originally built.
At the monastery for women, there is an exhibition of weaving and embroidery works by monks.
