In the south part of the prefecture, 35km from Rethymno city (about a 50-minute car ride), you will come across Preveli, one of the most famous beaches not only in the prefecture but in the whole island.
The beach is known as Preveli Lake or Foinikas, and it is located at the exit of Kourtaliotiko gorge with Megas Potamos river running through it, 10km east of Plakias tourist resort. It stands out for the Theofrastos cluster of palm trees that create a rather exotic scenery.
In order to get to the beach you have to leave your car at the Monastery of Preveli and go down a path for about 15-20'. Note that from this spot you can enjoy the superb view of the beautiful beach. Alternatively, you can drive to Drimiskiano Ammoudi and then walk for about 5' from where you park your car.
Preveli beach is sandy, with a pebbled sea floor. There are sea bikes to rent so you can ride in the river, as well as some tavernas and snack bars.
