The only winery in Santorini, which combines a tour of its facilities with lunch at Aroma Avlis restaurant. It all starts in 1952, when the grandfather Artemis cultivated his vineyards to make wine that would cover the needs of his own family and then sell it to the island and the rest of Greece.
"For as long as I remember myself, I always followed my grandfather and took part in every activity -planting, pruning, harvesting. Generally, I liked working on the land. We used to live at Kamari, both in winter and summer, and make the wines –white wines, red, Vinsanto– together with my grandfather. In fact, the Vinsanto wine that we have just bottled was my grandfather’s." Artemis Karamolegos, the grandson who succeeded his grandfather and then his father at the winery in Exo Gonia, is a young man, energetic and passionate about his work.
The shift to modern, quality production began in 2004 with the production of good, bottled and labelled (then O.P.A.P) wine "SANTORINI". The first and most important step was to renovate part of the old vineyards, plant new ones and rebuild others with rare traditional varieties; like Aidani, Mavrotragano, Mavrathyro and Voudomato. It was only natural, then, that the modernisation of the vineyard –the most important part in the production of wine– to result in the creation of a modern winery.
Today, Artemis Karamolegos Winery produces 10 different wine labels. It utilizes in the best possible way the combination of the unique microclimate with the volcanic, calcareous soils offered by the terroir of Santorini and "leads" Assyrtiko variety, along with other local grape varieties, in wine production internationally famous for their quality.
The highly responsible work done in vineyards and winemaking, results in wines of Artemis Karamolegos Winery winning many awards in major International Wine Competitions. The winery produces 250,000 bottles annually and the varieties you can enjoy include: Assyrtiko-Aidani-White, Athiri-Mandilaria-Mavrotragano-Voudomato.
