Gastronomy

If Sifnos is famous for something, this is its local gastronomy as it is the birthplace of our "national" chef Nikolaos Tselementes, the author of the first culinary book in Greece in 1910 under the title "Tselementes".

Chickpea soup cooked in a clay pot with olive oil, onions and bay leaves, mastelo (grilled meat, usually goat or lamb in a pot with local wine and dill cooked in vine), chickpea croquettes, croquettes made of fava beans or fish roe (tarama), and caper salad are the most famous local traditional dishes. From dairy products try the local xinomizithra cheese, anthotiro cheese and manoura cheese.

* If you ever find yourself on the island in September, do not miss the "Nikolaos Tselementes" Festival of Cycladic Gastronomy dedicated to the famous chef, where you can taste all the local specialties of the island.
