Within a 9 km distance from Apollonia (15' drive) in the southern part of the island, the settlement of Platis Gialos is found. This picturesque hamlet is located right in front of the eponymous beach, it is fully organized with all the tourist facilities and is ideal for quiet and relaxing holidays.
Its most important sights include the White Tower -one of the 77 towers in total across the island and the best preserved tower until today- the church of Agia Sofia and a small, open air theatre next to Alexandros Vernikos square. Opposite the village there is the uninhabited Kitriani islet where the church of Panagia Kitriani is located, the oldest one of the island, dating between the 10th and the 11th century. Finally, in the left part of Platis Gialos bay, there is a fishing shelter featuring services to pleasure boats.
The sandy beach of Platis Yialos (one of the largest beaches on the island) is quite popular among Greeks visiting Sifnos, and has been awarded a blue flag.
