One of the last remaining ecological paradises of the Mediterranean Sea, the tiny island of Alonnisos, just two hours from Skiathos, is a must visit location if you are already in Sporades.
You can reach it by boat from Skiathos and your first acquaintance with the island starts at the port, also known as Patitiri. The Old Alonissos -known as Old Village- is only a few minutes’ drive from the port, it will be your second stop and definitely your favourite place on the island.
Labyrinthine alleys, houses of traditional architecture, vines and colourful flowers compose its beautiful image, boasting panoramic views both of the sea and of the rest of the island. One of the main attractions is the medieval castle offering also unlimited views of the Aegean Sea.
However, what makes Alonissos both different and special in comparison to the other Greek islands is the fact that the National Marine Park of Alonnisos Northern Sporades is located here, the largest water park in Europe and the first in Greece. Terrestrial and aquatic habitats with countless species of plants and animals make up a unique attraction with great interest from both scientific and educational point of view, as well as from a cultural perspective. In fact, the only Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre for the Mediterranean monk seal is located in the area of Steni Vala, which specialises in the rehabilitation of baby seals.
If you have time, visit some of the beaches of the island for a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters. The favourite choices of the people include the beaches of Agios Dimitrios, Leftos Gialos, Kokkinokastro, Chrysi Milia, etc.
