The Armata is one of the most popular festivals on Spetses and takes place every year on the second weekend of September. Apart from the celebrations of the Virgin of Armata (the church towards the island's lighthouse), the anniversary of the battle of September 8, 1822 is also celebrated on this weekend. The festivities conclude with the burning of the Turkish flagship.

For the record, during the battle of Spetses during the Turkish occupation the local fireship captain, Kosmas Barbatsis, managed to pass the cordon of Turkish formation and reach the enemy flagship with his ship. With the Turkish flagship on fire before sinking in front of the port -according to tradition- the actions of the Spetses fireship captain played a decisive role in the outcome of the battle. After that, the Turkish fleet retreated empty-handed and Nafplio fell two and a half weeks later.
