Easter in Syros is just one of those experiences that you must live at least once in your lifetime. So add it to your bucket list, because this is the one of the few places in Greece where those of the Catholic and Orthodox faiths celebrate Holy Easter together. The atmosphere is simply and uniquely magnificent!
The procession commences with three Orthodox epitaphs from the church of Agiou Nikolaou, the church of Koimiseos tis Theotokou, and the church of the Metamorfoseos tou Sotira. They then meet with the Catholic epitaphs in Miaoulis Square who begin their procession at the Cathedral of Agiou Georgiou (San Giorgio) in Ano Syros and the church of Evaggelistrias in Ermoupoli, where the official prayers take place.
Those of the Orthodox faith follow the epitaph holding poles with tunics, and sponges and dice, thus symbolising Christ's passion. After the Orthodox "Anastasi" mass, meaning "Resurrection", the Catholics carry Jesus Christ’s statue in procession, which is placed in a golden baldachin open on all four sides and covered with violets, lemon blossoms and lilacs, accompanied with banners of various brotherhoods.
