One of Thessaloniki's most important monuments and a jewel of the Byzantine era, the Church of Agia Sophia is dedicated to the wisdom of God. It was built in the 7th century on the ruins of an early Christian basilica. The temple is a typical example of a domed cross basilica based on the development of new architectural style of domed basilicas.
It is located at the junction of Ermou Street and Agias Sophias Street and inside it you can admire the ornate 11th century frescoes and mosaics representing three different eras. Very similar to Agia Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul), it leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits it.
