One day excursion to Ioannina
The charming city of Ioannina is located 261 km away from Thessaloniki (approximately 2.5 hours’ drive). Its mystical and unique ambience –for which it is famed– is due to the much photographed Pamvotida lake –the city’s trademark attraction.
This lake oozes serenity and tranquility capturing the imagination of every visitor. Small lake boats transport both locals and visitors to the picturesque islet of the lake –one of the few of its kind in Europe. Couples, families, groups of people and cyclists roam the streets as the sun begins to set and the picturesque city’s cafes start to fill up.
You should not pass up the opportunity to visit the city’s Castle, the Vrellis Wax Museum, Perama Cave and take a stroll at the Its Kale (the south eastern acropolis of the Castle). During your visit in the lake islet it is worthwhile to see up close the interesting exhibits at the Ali Pasha Museum.
As you stroll along the city streets and admire its many landmarks and museums you will get the feeling that you have been transported to another era, filled with secrets and legends. Some of the unique attractions here are the wonderful buildings, such as the residence of Hussein Matei, the Ottoman Mosque of Veli Pasha and the city’s historical center as a whole.
