One day excursion to Edessa and Agios Athanasios
Edessa the capital of Pella district, is located 103 km west of Thessaloniki. Its landmark Waterfalls, a rare and impressive stectacle in a city's center, are the largest and most beautiful in the Balkans, and are sure to make you want to visit them as many times as possible.
The Karanos waterfall and the Double Waterfall, both are located in the midst of the geological waterfall park and surrounded by a forrest of century old sycamore trees, definitely catch the eye of all the visitors.
Other attractions are the small bridges over the countless channels which cross the city, the picturesque historic center (one of Ancient Greece's most important cities) known as the Varosi district which is lined with buildings of Macedonian architecture, the church of the Virgin Mary's Assumption (Koimisis tis Theotokou) which was built in the 14th century, the Yeni Mosque, Cannavourgion (where cannabis was used to make ropes), the remains of early Christian and Byzantine churches, and the green parks (Alexander the Great and Kioupri being the most notable).
While in Edessa, seize the opportunity to visit the beautiful Palaios Agios Athanasios village, located 33 km away from the capital of Pella. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Western Macedonia, as well as one of the ski lovers’ favourites –apart from visiting the village during a winter ski trip, you can also come here throughout the year to participate in wide range of wild nature activities.
The picturesque scenery is one of the village’s main traits –bear in mind that it has been listed as a traditional settlement– boasting its traditional local architecture, the stone made houses with roof tiles and the cobbled streets. The last few years the tourist influx has risen following the opening of cozy guesthouses, luxurious hotels, traditional taverns and restaurants, as well as cafe-bars for all budgets.
The highlight here, especially during winter, is the Kaimaktsalan Ski Center, on Voras mountain at an altitude of 2,524 m. and 40 km away from the center of Edessa.
