Saint George's Rotunda

Undoubtedly one of Thessaloniki's most important early Christian and Byzantine monuments, Saint George's Rotunda has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located within walking distance of the Arch of Galerius and resembles the Pantheon in Rome.

The Rotunda is an impressive 4th century domed circular building, initially designed to be Emperor Galerius' mausoleum. However, Galerius' death (311 AD) cancelled this plan and the Rotunda had no use until it was converted into a Christian church dedicated to St. George.
