State Museum of Contemporary Art

The State Museum of Contemporary Art is housed on the northeast side of the Lazariston Monastery complex in the Stavroupolis district of Thessaloniki.

Founded in 1997 it houses the famous George Costakis Collection, which includes around 1,277 works of art (paintings, drawings, installations, porcelains, etc.) made by the most prominent Russian avant-garde artists of the early decades of the 20th century (Malevich, Popova, Klucis, Rodchenko, Kliun etc.), as well as a remarkable collection of works by contemporary artists.

Since 2007, the State Museum of Contemporary Art has been responsible for the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art with the assistance of many cultural institutions.
