The National Sea Park of Zakynthos is located in the southeast end of the island, in the wider area including Laganas and the Strofades comlex, the Pelouzo isles, Marathonisi, Agios Sostis, the terrestrial area of Zakynthos Municipality, the Vasilikos and Argassi Communities and the Laganas Municipality (Kalamaki, Pantokratoras, Lithakia, and Keri Communities). The park spreads over 89.2 km² in the sea, 14.2km² on land, while the peripheral zone is nearly 31.2km².
It was created for the protection and preservation of the habitat of plants and animals that constitute the most important natural inheritance nationally as well as internationally. The preservation of the natural inheritance and the conservation of the ecological balance in the sea and coastal area of the Laganas bay, as well as of all the isles in the Zakynthos Prefecture, along with the parallel development of activities that are in harmony with the protection of nature, are the main concerns of the people at the National Sea Park.
At the borders of the National Sea Park, there is one of the most important biotopes for the reproduction of the Caretta-Caretta turtle, in the Mediterranean. Important biotopes for the Monachus-Monachus Mediterranean seal, the migrating avifauna, endemic flora as well as biotopes of European and Mediterranean interest, such as dunes and halophile vegetation and the Posidonia oceanica underwater beds, are also included.
