The perfect panorama of the Saronic Gulf from the amazing Temple of Poseidon
The afternoon is the ideal time of the day for a short excursion to the impressive Cape Sounio, located at the very edge of the Athenian Riviera, 63 km from Athens.
The Route in a Nutshell
- Drive along the Athenian Riviera
- Guided tour of the Temple of Poseidon
- Panoramic view of the Saronic Gulf and the neighboring islands
During this half-day bus tour you will be accompanied by a professional guide as you head along the scenic south coast of Attica. The unique coastal landscape will capture your imagination as you pass by the high end suburbs of Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza.
You will be able to spot the dominating cliff of Cape Sounio from afar. Once you reach your destination, your guide will show you around the majestic Temple of Poseidon, the God of the sea. This magnificent sample of the Classical era was constructed between 444 and 440 BC over the ruins of an archaic temple and was considered to be very sacred, especially for mariners.
The charm of this place is so irresistible that the famous poet and philhellene Lord Byron inscribed his name into one of the columns of the temple. From this vantage point you will afford a panoramic view of the coastline and the neighboring islands, as far as the mountains of Peloponnese on a clear day. Don’t forget to take as many photos as you can before boarding the bus that will take you back to Athens.
